Back to school essentials

by Julie Drapeau

The beloved warm season is over and although your summer holidays and that nice summer breeze still vividly play out in your mind, it's time to put away the sun care and insect repellent products and focus on the next season - back to school.

You must now look at revamping your HABA section to satisfy your customer's needs but also to remind them of what they may need to make their back to school season a successful one. While the focus is on school attire and multivitamins, you need to pay specific attention to your natural personal care section. The 'back to school' period means an increased risk of various infections. What can you introduce to your customers to prevent these unfortunate happenings?

From head to toe, there is an increased contamination risk as soon as children hit school and many parents are not aware of the natural solutions that are on the market. Your task is to display all these choices. The majority of the mainstream products are very strong and filled with chemicals that can irritate a child's skin. So, what exactly are these products?

Lice or no lice?

Are we talking about lice? That is the question. Build an end cap starting with shampoo and conditioner made of tea tree which will help prevent and treat lice problems. Share with your customers the benefits of using natural brands, such as removing the lice while keeping hair and scalp soft without creating itchiness or redness. You may also want to suggest the lice kit for bed sheets which would complete the cleansing package in an efficient but non-invasive way.

Bacteria is everywhere

Door knobs and various other surfaces can be filled with bacteria. And let's be realistic - how many kids will wash their hands to ensure they thoroughly remove any possible invaders?

To feel safe and ensure that children cleanse their hands, parents have to make it a fun experience. Display natural hand sanitizers which offer different essential oils. There is a scent and texture for everyone; from a lavender spray to a tea tree cream and many more! Promote and suggest the ones made with essential oils, not alcohol, as alcohol will dehydrate the skin and make it itchy especially if you have a child that loves the scent of the product.

Many natural solutions

There is an obvious need for antibacterial products and the great news is that many distributors offer you a natural solution. While you should heavily promote these products from mid-August to the end of October, I recommend keeping a couple of shelves all year round that contain all your antibacterial products.
