Foodsmiths in Perth, ON held a summer-long celebration (July1-Aug. 31) to mark the10th Anniversary of the store’s BYOB (Bring your own Bag) program.

So far, the ongoing campaign has saved in excess of 1.5 million bags going into landfill. The BYOB program began in 2005 as a way to encourage customers to re-use grocery bags, as well as to provide a source of funds for local charitable organizations. For every bag a customer brings in that saves the use of a new plastic bag, Foodsmiths donates 10¢ to charity. Each month a new local charity is selected. So far, the BYOB program has raised more than $50,000 for local charities, in addition to the over $150,000 in other charitable donations Foodsmiths has made over the same time period.

To acknowledge 10 years, Foodsmiths held a BYOBaby contest. Prizes included a reversible stroller, and baskets of environmentally friendly baby products.
