The Everyday Impact
By Ellen Wheeler
Each of us makes an impact. While we may not set out every day to change the world, our actions and choices add up. Whether it’s a kind word, a warm smile, or a listening ear, we all make a difference in our own, small ways.
As I continue to travel across the provinces and meet more people who work in our incredible industry, one truth becomes increasingly clear: what we do matters.
Each day, retailers open their doors and welcome customers into spaces that support their communities. While the natural products and expert advice retailers provide are invaluable, they also offer something even more meaningful: relationships that unite communities. This is the legacy we’re building. And the building blocks of this legacy are the everyday moments: the conversations that happen across the counter, the time spent helping a customer find the right product, the mentorship shared between colleagues, and the relationships built over years.
With the recent passing of Deane Parkes, a friend and pillar of the natural health industry, I’ve found myself reflecting on the role each of us plays—no matter how big or small—in strengthening this industry. Deane was an unyielding source of support, joy, and knowledge that he generously shared with us all. He touched the lives of countless customers, colleagues, and friends—mine included. In this issue, we honor Deane’s legacy by sharing his final column and celebrating the lasting impact he had on our industry.
We’re also celebrating the resilience of this industry in the face of constant change. We’ll look at the ways that Good + Natural has not only weathered three decades of industry evolution but has continued to grow alongside its community in Manitoba. That same spirit of adaptability carries into this edition of the 2026 Retailer Roundtable series. The first article in the series focuses on strategies for protecting profitability without raising prices while continuing to strengthen customer relationships that set independent stores apart from mass-market competitors.
As we continue to champion this industry, CNHR is proud to partner with COTA on the inaugural Organic Month Trailblazer Award. The award recognizes independent retailers who are leading the way in organic education, community engagement, and consumer trust. I encourage retailers across the country to take part in Organic Month this September and celebrate the role they play in inspiring consumers and growing Canada’s organic movement.
I’m also looking forward to CHFA NOW Toronto (September 25–27) and the opportunity to spend time with retailers from across the country. I hope to see many of you there. Until then, I’d love to hear from you at ellen.wheeler@alive.com.
