Jon Janower announces retirement from Choices Market
After nearly 49 years in the grocery business, Choices Market Chief Operating Officer Jon Janower announced his retirement, effective April 24, 2026.
Jon’s career is a remarkable story of dedication, integrity, and people‑first leadership. He grew up in the industry, helping his dad run a grocery store in Prince George, BC, starting at age 10. Inspired by his dad, Jon was managing his own store, was hooked on the business by age 18. After managing a store in Port Hardy, BC, for several years, Jon relocated to BC’s Lower Mainland as an independent retail merchandising manager for Buy-Low Foods. Jon joined Choices Market in the late 1990s, when it had just two stores, and helped guide its growth to 11 locations and its integration into the Pattison Food Group. He became chief operating officer for Choices Market in 2012.
Jon is known as a calm, consistent, and optimistic leader who cares deeply about his people—a philosophy shaped by the mentorship of founders Wayne and Lloyd Lockhart. He is widely respected across the natural and organic foods community for his professionalism, integrity, and strong relationships. His people‑first approach has been evident in everything from his steady leadership and mentorship to his longstanding tradition of visiting every store to cook summer BBQ lunches and Christmas breakfasts as a thank‑you to the team.
Under Jon’s leadership, Choices has earned repeated recognition from the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, three Fairtrade Canada Retailer of the Year awards, and most recently, Organic Retailer of the Year for 2025 from the Canada Organic Trade Association. These achievements reflect Jon’s belief that great retail is built on strong relationships, open‑mindedness, and sincere appreciation for people.
