Initiatives shaping organic for your shelf and brand
In a year marked by trade tensions, including tariffs and supply chain challenges, one thing remains steady: consumer trust in certified organic. The Canada Organic Regime (COR) logo continues to signal quality, care, and credibility. Several initiatives are happening behind the scenes so that businesses can continue meeting growing consumer demand for healthy, sustainable organic food.
Keeping organic standards current
Every five years, the Canadian Organic Standards (COS)—the foundation of COR—are reviewed to reflect new research, evolving sector needs, and alignment with trading partners. The latest update will be adopted in December 2025 and implemented within 12 months thereafter.
Supporting interprovincial trade while protecting the organic brand
To harmonize trade across provinces, the federal government introduced Bill C-5, recognizing many provincial standards as equivalent to federal ones. Organic associations are advocating for an exemption, as COR certification already ensures consistent national and international standards, supply chain integrity, and consumer trust.
Promoting environmental benefits with confidence
Environmental benefits are a key differentiator for organic consumers. New anti-greenwashing rules require stronger proof, prompting some businesses to scale back environmental claims. To support continued promotion, work is underway to provide clear guidance and credible substantiation—reinforced by the rigorous standards of COR certification.
Expanding offerings through global trade equivalencies
Canada’s nine organic equivalency arrangements facilitate trade with 35 countries, increasing product variety and availability. Arrangements with the US and EU are currently under review.
Strengthening import oversight
New import controls introduced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in May 2025 enhance monitoring and data collection, helping protect the integrity of organic products entering Canada.
Driving long-term growth through a national strategy
Launching in November 2025, Canada’s National Organic Action Plan will provide a strategic roadmap for long-term growth. It aims to support a thriving, value-added organic market by strengthening supply, demand, and the entire value chain.
As a national voice for organic, the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) works at the intersection of policy and trade—advocating for an enabling regulatory environment for organic businesses, protecting the organic logo, and driving market opportunity.
