Canada’s Organic Action Plan: What’s in it for the retailer?
A vision for organic in Canada
Submitted by Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA)
The Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) champions the growth and integrity of organic trade from farm to marketplace. As a national voice for organic, COTA works at the intersection of policy and trade, advocating for enabling regulatory environments for organic businesses, protecting the organic logo, and driving market opportunity.
COTA, in partnership with the Canadian Organic Alliance and in consultation with the organic industry, has developed an Organic Action Plan (OAP) for Canada, drawing on international best practices to drive sector growth.
At its core, the OAP is about meeting consumer demand for healthy, sustainable options that feel good for the consumers and their families. The OAP offers a roadmap to ensure that the organic sector can keep pace and remain competitive while also benefiting the entire value chain, including retailers.
Three pillars that support retail growth[SUBHEAD]
Strengthen the framework and infrastructure for growth
For retailers, trust and consistency are critical. This pillar strengthens the organic sector with reliable public data, clear and consistent standards, and expanded certification options to ensure the products on shelf meet rising consumer expectations. It also calls for government to act as a proactive partner, investing in programs and policies that support sector growth, streamline compliance, and create a stable, trustworthy marketplace for organic products.
Accelerate growth and innovation in organic production
With the recent tariff war, consumers are turning to local. Canadian retailers need more domestic organic products. The OAP recommends policies to incentivize and de-risk organic transition and production, support research and innovation, and help Canadian producers meet the demand.
Stimulate organic market development
Long-term growth depends on consumer education, supply chain investment, and stronger local food systems. Dedicated organic consumers are not just following a trend; they are shaping the future of food. The OAP ensures the supply chain can continue to bring more products to market, ensuring a balance of supply and demand.
The OAP has something for all value chain partners. For retailers, it is a strategic opportunity to grow with Canada’s organic sector.
